Abstract: In the 2010 Stasiuk Lecture, Dr Gwendolyn Sasse assesses Ukraine's achievements in state-building and argues that the largest country within Europe is a 'normal' nation, state and democracy whose regional diversity is an asset rather than a liability. Introduction by Rory Finnin, Lecturer in Ukrainian Studies, Department of Slavonic Studies, University of Cambridge. The Stasiuk Lecture Series, now in its eighth year, is generously supported by the Stasiuk Programme for Contemporary Ukraine, Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta. It is presented by Cambridge Ukrainian Studies, an initiative of the Department of Slavonic Studies, with the support of the Cambridge Ukrainian Society.
