Abstract: The First World War transformed how states thought about war, and in particular how they and their armed forces both shaped their strategies during it and then came to conceptualise strategy thereafter. The concepts with which they entered the war matched neither the scale of the events nor the level of national mobilisation they were required to make. From 'attrition' to blockade, from 'grand strategy' to total war, the war's consequences resonated for the remainder of the 20th century.
