Abstract: Philippe Sands’ 2013 Tanner Lectures - The Great Crimes – explores the origins, consequences and tensions relating to ‘genocide’ and ‘crimes against humanity’, two international crimes that entered into the world of international law in the Nuremberg Trial.

The second lecture (‘The Troubles’) explores the relationship between ‘crimes against humanity’ and ‘genocide’, exploring which of the two legal ideas better commends itself to the function of international law in preventing mass crimes and whether the law should reflect a social or biological reality (as some claim), or seek to change it (as other believe).
