Abstract: Scientific research, in many of its forms, is an essential component in developing regional and world-wide welfare. It has been through “basic” research than many of the great technological achievements, from which many benefit, have happened. However, given the often limited resources a community possesses, and the fact that in many cases the scientific endeavour requires years to yield fruits, a more directed or applied research is required. How can the right equilibrium between basic and directed research be found within a particular context? Although the debate on basic versus applied research is not new, scientific and technological discoveries in recent year along with current economic realities and business opportunities, have put this discussion back on the table. The speakers are: Professor Sir Tom Blundell FRS FMedSci - Director of Research and Professor Emeritus, Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge and Founding Chief Executive and former non-Executive Chairman of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC); Dr Alessio Ciulli - Gates alumnus and BBSRC David Phillips Fellow (on early-stage drug discovery against diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis) and a Fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge; Dr Richard Henderson FRS - Former Director and Joint-Head of Division of Structural Studies at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) and Fellow of the Royal Society and Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences; and Professor Ajit Lalvani MA, MBBS, DM, FRCP - Chair of Infectious Diseases, Director of the Tuberculosis Research Unit and Co-Chairman of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London and founder and Director of the Tuberculosis Research Unit. The moderator is Dr Andrew Robertson - Gates alumnus (PhD Genetics), Trustee of the Gates Cambridge Trust and graduate researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. The panel was organised by Andrew Robertson, Cyndee Carver DeKlotz and Luis Briseno-Roa - all Gates Cambridge Alumni
