Abstract: This practice uses the breath as the focus of attending for the first part of the practice and then expands awareness to include the whole of the body. During the first part of the practice the intention is not to change or alter the breath in way - either by intentionally changing or altering the rhythm, depth or rate of breathing - but simply to allow the breath to breathe itself in and breathe itself out. The task during the practice is to gather our attention and to experience the breath movement through each cycle, gently and firmly bringing our attention back to this focus whenever we notice that the mind has wandered. As awareness expands to take in the whole of the body, the breath movements move into the background and attention is intentionally focussed on a sense of the whole of the body sitting, breathing. It may also be drawn to areas of particular intense sensation; exploring this experience through the vehicle of the breath is invited.
