Abstract: After a period of uncertainty, the UK Government has conceded that it will seek a transitional framework as a bridge between the UK's membership of the European Union and the 'deep and special partnership' with the EU that it will seek to secure once the UK has left the EU. 'Transitional' throws up a number of important political questions about its duration and whether the UK will be bound by new EU rules and by EU institutions. Legally, such a framework may be complex to put in place and difficult to implement. This lecture explores what transition might look like and whether such a framework is really necessary.

The Madingley Lectures take place at Madingley Hall, home of the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE). This lecture series, given by eminent speakers across a wide range of subjects, is an important part of ICE's commitment to public engagement.
