Abstract: | The movement of cells between different points induced by certain events, biological signals or environmental inputs is called cell migration. This process is essential for a large number of physiological processes like wound healing and immune response, but also for a variety of diseases. Investigating for instance the migration and invasion of tumor and stromal cells to understand the basic principles, gives valuable input for novel approaches in the diagnosis of cancer, the prognosis and the development of new drugs. Key features of migration assays are the easy application, the reproducibility and the significance of the results. An overview is given about different established in vitro assay types which can be used to evaluate cell migration. The assays are divided in methods for kinetic analysis and for endpoint measurements and also in 2D and 3D migration. Problems and limitations are discussed and the respective read out as well as the mathematical interpretation is presented.
