Abstract: A major factor constraining our understanding of non-communicable diseases is the imprecision with which we measure common lifestyle exposures, such as diet, physical activity, body composition, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption. These are considered to have major effects on health and development, yet often they are assessed crudely or inappropriately, or the resulting data are misinterpreted.

A web-based toolkit is being developed to provide practical, online methodological guidance for population health researchers, enabling them to easily incorporate robust methods into future study designs. It will also facilitate direct access to measurement resources wherever possible, such as online questionnaires, software and analysis packages. This improved access to know-how and high-quality measurement tools should make it much easier in the future to do ‘good science’, reducing the confusion and wasted resources caused by unnecessary measurement error.
